Training description
Today, z/OS supports new workloads running as e-business servers, including the IBM Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server and WebSphere. These workloads take advantage of the latest features of z/OS execution environments, including Parallel Sysplex, Workload Manager (WLM) and UNIX System Services (USS). New hardware technology such as zAAP and zIIP processors can be used for selected workloads, and WLM Intelligent Resource Director balances workloads across clustered LPAR partitions in Sysplex.
Participant profile
This advanced course is designed for z/OS developers, experienced performance analysts and performance administrators, UNIX service support personnel and other experienced I/S professionals who want to upgrade their RMF and performance management skills to include the latest z/OS e-business and zEnterprise Ensemble execution environments.
Agenda
Day 1
- Welcome
- Unit 1: Advanced z/OS performance review
- Unit 2: Parallel Sysplex Tuning
- Exercise 1: Introduction to the system
- Exercise 2: Parallel Sysplex Tuning
Day 2
- Unit 3: Workload Manager and Performance
- Unit 4: zAAP and zIIP: specialized processors
- Unit 5: Monitoring and tuning UNIX system services
Day 3
- Unit 5: Monitoring and tuning UNIX system services (continued)
- Exercise 3: USS batch performance
- Exercise 4: USS classification
- Unit 6: Advanced load management and resource monitoring features
- Exercise 5: z/OSMF and performance management
Day 4
- Exercise 5: z/OSMF and performance management (continued)
- Unit 7: zEnterprise Platform Performance Management
- Exercise 6: Cross-platform monitoring with RMF XP
Required preparation of participants
Working knowledge of the z/OS operating environment is assumed, including basic knowledge of WLM, UNIX system services and Parallel Sysplex. Prior experience or training in z/OS and RMF measurement and tuning is also assumed. Such training can be obtained by attending the course: Basic z/OS Tuning Using Workload Manager (WLM) (ES540)
Issues
- Describing the advanced performance components of the current complex z/OS environment and identifying the main performance drivers for these components
- Identify coupling object (CF) technologies and how they function in Parallel Sysplex, including CF links and CF structures
- Monitor and analyze service times and other performance metrics of CF and other Parallel Sysplex components, including the inter-system coupling facility (XCF)
- Predict and monitor the effects managed by CF duplexing on system performance
- Identifying WLM services and their use by z/OS applications, including enclave services, routing services and application environments
- Evaluating RMF enclave reports and understanding enclave resource accounting
- Deploy and control optional WLM functions such as Intelligent Resource Director (IRD) and defined WLM capacity, and monitor LPAR performance once optimized by these functions
- Describing the new functionality introduced by specialized zAAP and zIIP processors in z/OS systems and using appropriate tools to control and monitor CP workload performance
- Monitor and control the USS program environment using RMF reports and System Management Facility (SMF) data along with USS console commands and displays
- Customizing USS resource utilization, shell performance and file system performance for Hierarchical File System (HFS) and zFS
- Configuring WLM’s management of the USS environment, including BPXAS and classification of USS workloads
- Describing the purpose of Unified Resource Manager and the various system layers on which it can operate
- Describing what load resource groups mean in a zEnterprise environment
- Describing what performance management capabilities Unified Resource Manager provides
- Describing the role that Guest Platform Management Provider and Application Resource Measurement technologies play in the zEnterprise environment
- Explaining how zEnterprise technologies work with z/OS Workload Manager (WLM)
- Describing the performance features of Unified Resource Manager
- Gain knowledge of how to use RMF XP – a solution for monitoring cross-platform performance (z/OS and distributed platforms)
- Using RMF XP to monitor all operating systems running on IBM
- zEnterprise Blade Center Extension
