Training description
Do you want to know how to create a practical performance management program for your z/OS system? This course is designed for new performance analysts who want to learn how to work with Workload Manager (WLM) in target mode. Learn WLM concepts and how to manage performance on your z/OS system using WLM.
Participant profile
This is an intermediate course for z/OS developers, z/OS performance analysts and z/OS performance administrators who are new to the adventure of managing the performance of their z/OS system.
Note: The ES54 is designed for people who are new to WLM and the z/OS performance area.

Required preparation of participants
You should:
- Understand the basic operation of MVS and z/OS, such as task flow through JES, task scheduling paging, swapping, dispatching control and input/output scheduling
- Have a basic understanding of the purpose of the Workload Manager function in system load management
- Be familiar with using TSO and ISPF to manage data sets and run batch jobs
Issues
In this course we will discuss:
- Describing performance and tuning methodologies
- Develop a systematic z/OS performance and tuning plan
- Describing factors that can affect z/OS system performance
- Using the WLM ISPF application
- Describing the components of a service definition
- Defining load and service levels and classification rules
- Determine which z/OS commands affect WLM operation
- Identify the main WLM services for z/OS, including enclave and application environment, and how they are used by DB2, WebSphere and CICS
- Analyze CPU performance when running in a shared LPAR partition environment
- Use and monitoring of specialized zIIP and zAAP engines
- Measure and adjust z/OS DASD configurations, processor storage and coupling objects
- Explaining the functions and objects of RMF and SMF
- Analyzing the performance bottleneck with RMF
- Using load license fees (WLC), defined capacity and soft cap to manage software costs
- Describing advanced z/OS environments that use Intelligent Resource Director (IRD), HyperDispatch, z/OSMF Workload Management and I/O Priority Manager
- Using jobs from/OSMF Workload Management (WLM)
- Using performance monitoring with z/OSMF
- Modify the WLM service definition to meet the requirements for monitoring a specific system load
- Create and customize monitored dashboards
- Review any problems using the monitored dashboards option
- Evaluating the performance of workloads running on z/OS
