Training description
To provide an overview of the z operating system (OS), look at systems from both a hardware and software perspective and develop a basic understanding of System z partitioning capabilities, Processor Resource/Systems Manager (PR/SM), z/OS, Job Entry Subsystem 2 (JES2), Job Entry Subsystem 3 (JES3), Time Sharing Option (TSO), TSO Extended (TSO/E), System Display and Search Facility (SDSF), z/OS Communications Server and the use of the System z channel subsystem for various channels such as Enterprise System Connection (ESCON), Fiber Connector (FICON) and Open Systems Adapter (OSA). It will also describe the Initial Program Loader (IPL) process and enable you to comfortably issue z/OS commands from the Multi Console Support (MCS) system console or extended MCS console.
Participant profile
The basic course is designed for IT personnel with little or no theoretical knowledge of z/OS and little or no practical experience with IT systems.

- Naming functional groups and basic z/OS elements
- Describing the concept of virtual memory and its application in z/OS
- Issuing z/OS commands with correct syntax
- Identify z/OS display commands used to determine device status and channel path
- Describing the use of VARY and CONFIG operator commands in z/OS
- Interpreting the results of z/OS commands
- Identify the differences between JES2 and JES3
- Describing the use of JES2
- Discussion of SPOOL and checkpoint data sets
- Describing cold, warm and hot starts
- Issuing commands to control resources and display task status
- Describe the purpose and use of the following:
- TSO
- ISP/PDF
- Assign, display and edit data set information using ISP/PDF panels
- SDSF
- Describing naming rules for data sets in z/OS
- Describing the z/OS directory structure
- Describing the functions performed by DFSMS, DFSMSdss, DFSMShsm and DFSMSrmm to manage data sets in the data center
- Describing the functions of JCL catalogued procedures
- Identify the difference between MCS consoles and extended MCS consoles
- Issuing commands to determine the status and parameters of any console
- Describing the major console enhancements in z/OS 1.8, z/OS 1.10 and z/OS 2.1 versions
