Types of Microsoft Copilot
- Microsoft 365 Copilot — in office apps: writing and editing in Word, analysis and formulas in Excel, thread summaries in Outlook, meeting notes and summaries in Teams, presentation generation in PowerPoint.
- Copilot in Windows — a system-level assistant.
- GitHub Copilot — for developers (code, documentation).
- Copilot Studio — a low-code platform for building custom AI agents connected to company data and systems.
Uses in daily work
The fastest return comes from simple, repetitive tasks: drafting and summarizing documents, analyzing data and creating formulas in Excel, summarizing long email threads and meetings, preparing first drafts of presentations. Copilot does not replace the employee — it shortens the time from idea to first draft.
Data security — a condition for deployment
Microsoft 365 Copilot operates within the user’s permissions and the organization’s policies: it does not show data the user cannot access and does not train public models on company data. There is an important caveat, though: Copilot exposes existing permission gaps. If an employee had theoretical access to files they never opened, Copilot may surface them. That is why data access governance must be cleaned up before deployment.

When a company wants AI to handle specific processes (customer service, HR, IT helpdesk), Copilot Studio lets you build a custom low-code agent connected to data and systems through Power Platform and APIs. This is the step from using ready-made Copilot to creating your own AI assistants.
