Mobile Video in Practice — Reels, Stories and Quick Editing

A two-day hands-on workshop in mobile video and reportage photography. Day one moves from preparing the equipment and the basics of exposure through frame composition to a reportage that tells a story in images. Day two covers the full path from idea to publication: a script with a hook and a shot list, recording in vertical format, editing on a phone and on a computer, sound, music and captions. Every block on day one ends with an exercise, and day two ends with two pieces produced independently.

Material that looks like it came off a film set, shot on a phone

Conference coverage shot horizontally when it was always going to run as reels. The chief executive filmed into the light in front of a window. Five minutes of footage nobody managed to cut down to thirty seconds, because there was no time. Company video rarely loses for lack of equipment — it loses at the stage where nobody planned the shots and nobody knew where to place the person speaking.

This workshop works through both of those in order. First the fundamentals that decide whether footage can be edited at all: light, background, settings, frame composition. Then the full production path: a script with a hook, a shot list, vertical recording, editing, sound, captions and publication.

Who this workshop is for

For people who produce their organisation’s video and photo material — formally or alongside their main role. Particularly when:

  • you run company social media channels and publish coverage and teasers there,
  • you are responsible for event communications and need material the next day, not next week,
  • you document your teams’ work and want people on camera to look natural,
  • you shoot on a phone and want to stop guessing why it sometimes works and sometimes does not.

Two days: from settings to finished material

Day one — preparation and image. Equipment and exposure parameters, white balance, recording formats. Assessing light and background on location. Preparing the person appearing on camera. Frame composition with an exercise in three shots of the same subject. Reportage: wide, medium and detail shots, the establishing shot, a mini-reportage produced in pairs.

Day two — production. The path from idea to publication. A script with a hook, a shot list, transitions and a call to action. Vertical recording in 9:16. Editing on a phone and on a computer: camera movement, transitions, sound bites and teasers, sound and supporting equipment, material selection, the rhythm of a reel. Sound, music and automatic captions. Finally, two independent productions: an event teaser and event coverage.

What this workshop does not promise

The scope is described narrowly because that is how it is delivered:

  • This is not a course in one application. The editing block shows two tools as an example and teaches a way of working that transfers to any editor.
  • This is not film production training. We work in a mobile format — material produced quickly, on the equipment that is already to hand.
  • Optional blocks are described as optional. Mixed material and the timed editing exercise are run if the group’s pace allows — they are not a guaranteed part of the programme.

We deliver this workshop on site, because both days are built on working with equipment, exercises in pairs and reviewing the recorded material together. Get in touch to arrange the details of a delivery for your team.

Benefits

  • Prepare equipment and settings for a shoot — exposure parameters, white balance, recording formats
  • Assess light and background at the location and prepare the people appearing on camera
  • Compose the frame deliberately — rule of thirds, leading lines, symmetry, negative space, depth of field
  • Build a photo and video reportage that tells a story — wide shots, medium shots and details
  • Draft a simple script with a hook, a shot list, transitions and a call to action
  • Record material in vertical format and edit it on a phone as well as on a computer
  • Work with sound, music and automatic captions, and correct transcription errors

Frequently asked questions

How long is this training and how are the two days divided?

The training lasts 2 days. Day one covers preparing to shoot, frame composition and reportage, with a practical exercise after every block. Day two covers the full production path: planning and scripting, recording in vertical format, editing with sound and captions, and two independent productions — an event teaser and event coverage.

Is this workshop suitable for people with no experience?

Yes. The programme starts from the basics — exposure parameters, white balance and recording formats — so it assumes no prior experience in photography or editing. The emphasis is on practice: on day one participants complete an exercise after every block, and the second day ends with two finished pieces.

Which editing tools does the hands-on part cover?

The editing block is built around two applications available on both phone and computer — for example CapCut and Canva. The goal is not to learn one program but a way of working: selecting and trimming material, editing rhythm, combining video with stills, sound and captions. The same steps apply in other editors.

What does a participant take away from the workshop?

Above all, the full path from idea to publication worked through end to end, plus material recorded and edited independently on the second day — an event teaser and event coverage. Beyond that, a repeatable way of working: planning shots before recording, deliberate frame composition and fast editing.

Will I receive a certificate after the training?

Yes, every participant receives a personalised certificate of completion issued by EITT.
