Day 1: Risk management principles and the ISO 31000 framework

  • Introduction to risk management — risk definition (ISO 31000: effect of uncertainty on objectives), evolution (reactive to proactive to anticipatory), value for the organization
  • ISO 31000:2018 standard — principles (8 principles: integrated, structured, customized, inclusive, dynamic, based on information, considering human factor, continuous improvement)
  • Risk management framework — leadership and commitment, integration, design, implementation, evaluation, improvement
  • Risk management context — external context (PESTLE), internal context, process context, risk criteria (risk appetite, tolerance)
  • Relationship of ISO 31000 with other standards — ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 27001 (information security), ISO 22301 (business continuity), COSO ERM
  • Exercises: organizational context analysis (PESTLE, SWOT), defining risk criteria and risk appetite

Day 2: Risk management process — identification, analysis and evaluation

  • Risk identification — techniques (brainstorming, Delphi, scenario analysis, SWIFT, checklists), risk sources, risk register
  • Qualitative risk analysis — probability x impact matrix (5x5), scales, heat map, prioritization
  • Quantitative risk analysis — Expected Monetary Value (EMV), Monte Carlo simulation, decision trees, sensitivity analysis (tornado)
  • Risk evaluation — comparison with criteria, prioritization, decisions (accept, escalate, treat), stakeholder communication
  • Risk identification tools — bow-tie analysis (causes to event to consequences to barriers), FMEA, root cause analysis (RCA)
  • Exercises: risk identification (brainstorming + SWIFT), qualitative analysis (5x5 matrix), bow-tie analysis, building a risk register

Day 3: Risk treatment, monitoring and implementation

  • Risk treatment — strategies (avoidance, reduction, transfer/sharing, acceptance), treatment plan, risk owners, budgeting
  • Monitoring and review — KRI (Key Risk Indicators), risk dashboards, periodic reviews, escalation, board reporting
  • Communication and consultation — stakeholders, reporting (board-level, operational), risk management culture, awareness
  • Implementing risk management — integration with business processes (strategy, projects, operations), risk management maturity (maturity model)
  • Continuous improvement — lessons learned, register updates, emerging risks, stress testing, trend analysis
  • Exercises: designing a risk treatment plan, defining KRIs, ISO 31000 implementation case study in an organization
