What to do when enthusiasm subsides?

1. Change the scenery (Job Shadowing)

Get out of the conference room! Offer the mentee to spend an hour “in your shoes” - let them accompany you to a project meeting or watch you handle a difficult task (with all parties’ consent, of course). This is a powerful lesson in practice.

2. Reverse the roles for one session

Offer the mentee to be the one to teach you something at your next meeting. It could be a new application, an interesting function in Excel or a fresh perspective on a problem you are facing. This is a great way to appreciate the mentee’s knowledge and build partnerships.

3. Invite a special guest

If the mentee is working on a specific goal (e.g., public speaking), invite an expert in that field from another part of the company for 15 minutes. A brief conversation with a new person can bring a whole new energy and invaluable, fresh guidance.

4. Solve the “micro-problem”

Devote one meeting to something completely different. Find a small, annoying problem in your daily work (e.g., an ineffective email template, a cluttered folder) and together, in 30 minutes, try to solve it. A quick win together is great for refreshing the relationship.

5. Return to the source and celebrate

Take out your first mentoring contract. Read aloud the goals you set at the beginning. Talk about how far you’ve come. Conscious appreciation of your progress is one of the best injections of motivation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most effective way to re-energize a mentoring relationship?

Changing the scenery through job shadowing tends to have the strongest immediate impact because it moves the relationship from abstract conversation to real-world observation. Seeing a mentor handle actual challenges provides practical learning that no conference room discussion can replicate.

How can mentees contribute more actively to the mentoring relationship?

Mentees can take initiative by preparing specific topics or challenges for each meeting, volunteering to teach the mentor something new, and tracking their own progress against goals. Active participation transforms the mentee from a passive recipient into an engaged partner.

When should you consider ending a mentoring relationship?

Consider concluding the relationship when the original goals have been achieved, when both parties consistently struggle to find value in meetings despite trying various revitalization strategies, or when the mentee’s needs have evolved beyond the mentor’s area of expertise. A healthy ending is better than a forced continuation.

Can these mentoring techniques work in virtual settings?

Yes, all five strategies can be adapted for virtual mentoring. Job shadowing can happen via screen sharing during real meetings, role reversal works well over video calls, and guest experts can join remotely for brief sessions. The key principle of breaking routine applies equally to in-person and virtual formats.
