IT service management today is not merely a matter of technology, but above all a response to business needs, operational efficiency and continuous improvement. In a world where organisations operate in dynamic, multi-cloud and increasingly complex environments, the need for standardised approaches to service management has never been greater. ITIL 4 (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is a globally recognised framework that delivers best practices for IT Service Management (ITSM), helping organisations effectively deliver business value through IT services.
The ITIL 4 Foundation certificate is the starting point for anyone who wants to develop professionally in the ITSM area. It is proof of knowledge of key ITIL 4 concepts, terminology and principles, which opens doors to more advanced roles in IT service management, such as Service Manager, Problem Manager or Change Manager. For IT specialists, developers expanding their skills towards DevOps, or people transitioning to project and operations management, ITIL 4 Foundation is often the first, but crucial, step in their career.
In this article, you will learn everything you need to know to pass the ITIL 4 Foundation exam on your first attempt: from the scope and format of the exam, through costs and study plan, to practical tips and the most common pitfalls that candidates fall into.

What is ITIL 4 Foundation and why is this certificate worth obtaining?
ITIL 4 Foundation is an entry-level certificate in the ITIL 4 ecosystem, which confirms understanding of the basic concepts of IT service management in accordance with the latest version of the ITIL framework. ITIL 4 was introduced in 2019 by Axelos (now PeopleCert) as an evolution of earlier ITIL versions (particularly ITIL v3), responding to the needs of modern organisations operating in Agile, DevOps and digital transformation environments.
Unlike previous versions, which focused mainly on processes and the service lifecycle, ITIL 4 introduces a holistic value-based approach. The framework is based on four dimensions of service management, the Service Value System (SVS) and the Service Value Chain, which together create a flexible structure for delivering business value.
Why is ITIL 4 Foundation important for IT specialists?
1. Globally recognised standard ITIL is the most recognisable ITSM framework in the world. Over 1 million IT specialists hold ITIL certificates, and thousands of organisations worldwide apply ITIL practices in their daily operations. Having an ITIL 4 Foundation certificate is a signal to employers that you understand the universal language of IT service management.
2. Foundation for roles in ITSM The certificate is often required or welcomed during recruitment for positions related to IT service management: Service Desk Manager, Incident Manager, Problem Manager, Change Manager, Service Owner or IT Operations Manager. For people working as developers or system administrators, ITIL provides business and operational context that allows better understanding of the entire service lifecycle.
3. Bridge between IT and business ITIL 4 places particular emphasis on collaboration between IT and business, which is crucial in environments where IT is not only a technology provider, but a strategic partner. Understanding concepts such as value co-creation or the multidimensional approach to service management helps IT specialists communicate better with business stakeholders.
4. Compatibility with Agile and DevOps ITIL 4 was designed with organisations using modern working methodologies in mind. The framework is compatible with Agile, DevOps, Lean and other approaches, making it more flexible and practical than earlier versions. For people working in DevOps environments, ITIL 4 provides a management structure that complements the culture of continuous delivery and automation.
5. Career development path ITIL 4 Foundation is just the beginning. After obtaining Foundation, you can develop towards ITIL 4 Managing Professional (focusing on practical service management) or ITIL 4 Strategic Leader (focusing on strategy and leadership). These advanced certificates lead to the ITIL Master level, which is the pinnacle of ITIL certification.
What is the scope of the ITIL 4 Foundation exam?
The ITIL 4 Foundation exam covers key concepts, principles and practices of IT service management in accordance with the ITIL 4 framework. The official syllabus, published by PeopleCert (owner of the ITIL brand), defines the detailed scope of knowledge required to pass the exam. Understanding this scope is the first step to effective preparation.
Main areas of knowledge
The ITIL 4 Foundation exam focuses on the following knowledge domains:

10 practical tips on how to pass on your first attempt
The following tips come from the experience of thousands of candidates who passed the ITIL 4 Foundation exam, as well as EITT trainers who have prepared hundreds of IT specialists for this certificate.
1. Study from official materials
The exam is based on the official ITIL 4 Foundation syllabus published by PeopleCert. Unofficial materials (online courses, third-party books) may contain errors or be out of date. Always use the official ITIL 4 Foundation handbook as your main source of knowledge.
2. Understand, don’t memorise
ITIL 4 Foundation is not a “cram and pass” exam. Questions test understanding of concepts and the ability to apply them in business scenarios. Instead of memorising definitions, focus on understanding why a given practice exists, what its purpose is and how it influences value for the customer.
3. Master the 7 guiding principles
The ITIL 4 guiding principles are the foundation of the framework. They appear in many exam questions, often in the form of scenarios where you must determine which principle is most appropriate. Learn them not only by name, but understand their practical application and relationship with other SVS elements.
4. Differentiate similar concepts
The exam often tests understanding of differences between similar concepts:
- Incident vs. Problem: Incident is an unplanned interruption or reduction in service quality, Problem is the cause of one or more incidents
- Change Enablement vs. Release Management: Change Enablement manages changes in the environment, Release Management manages a package of changes (release)
- Utility vs. Warranty: Utility is functionality (what the service does), Warranty is assurance (how well the service does it)
5. Complete at least 200 practice questions
The more practice questions you complete, the better you will understand the style of exam questions and answer patterns. Goals:
- After 100 questions, you should achieve 60-70%
- After 200 questions, you should achieve 75-80%
- Before the exam, you should consistently achieve 80%+ on practice tests
6. Analyse mistakes, not just the score
After each practice test, the most important thing is to understand why you made a mistake. For each incorrect answer:
- Understand why your answer was incorrect
- Understand why the correct answer is correct
- Find this concept in the official handbook and read it again
- Add to flashcards if it’s a difficult concept
7. Learn actively, not passively
Simply reading the handbook is not enough. Use active learning techniques:
- Create notes in your own words
- Draw diagrams and mind maps (e.g. Service Value System)
- Explain concepts to someone else (or to yourself aloud)
- Solve scenario-based questions and think about how to apply knowledge in practice
8. Manage time during the exam
60 minutes for 40 questions is an average of 1.5 minutes per question. In practice:
- Easy questions (knowledge recall) should take 30-45 seconds
- More difficult questions (scenarios) may take 2-3 minutes
- Leave 5-10 minutes at the end to review questions marked for reconsideration
Strategy: Go through the entire exam once, answering questions you are sure about. Questions you have doubts about, flag and return to them at the end.
9. Read questions carefully
Many mistakes result from inattention, not lack of knowledge. Pay attention to:
- Key words: “BEST”, “MAINLY”, “PRIMARILY” suggest that there may be more than one correct answer, but one is most appropriate
- Negations: “NOT an example of…”, “Which of the following NOT…”
- Scenario context: sometimes a question contains additional context that eliminates some answers
10. Prepare logistically (for online exam)
If you are taking the online exam:
- Test your internet connection and equipment (camera, microphone) the day before the exam
- Tidy the room – there must be no materials, books, notes within camera range
- Prepare identity document (identity card/passport)
- Log in 15 minutes before the exam to go through check-in with the proctor
- Dress professionally (the proctor sees you through the camera)
- Turn off your phone and all electronic devices
What are the most common candidate mistakes?
Understanding typical pitfalls will help you avoid them. Here are the most common mistakes made by ITIL 4 Foundation candidates:
1. Confusing ITIL 4 with ITIL v3
ITIL 4 is an evolution of ITIL v3, but much has changed:
- ITIL v3 focused on processes and the service lifecycle (5-volume model: Service Strategy, Design, Transition, Operation, Continual Service Improvement)
- ITIL 4 focuses on value, the Service Value System (SVS) and practices (not processes)
If you have experience with ITIL v3, don’t assume that terminology and concepts are identical. For example:
- “Change Management” in ITIL v3 is “Change Enablement” in ITIL 4
- “Processes” in ITIL v3 are “Practices” in ITIL 4
2. Underestimating guiding principles
Guiding principles are not just “nice to know” – they are the foundation of ITIL 4, which permeates all practices and activities. Many exam questions test understanding of principles through scenarios. Candidates often cannot distinguish between principles or apply them in a business context.
3. Learning only definitions
Many people learn definitions by heart without understanding context. In the exam, you will find questions such as:
- “An organisation is experiencing recurring incidents related to the database. Which practice should be used to identify the root cause?”
This requires understanding that:
- Incident Management deals with restoring normal service operation as quickly as possible
- Problem Management identifies root causes of incidents and prevents their recurrence
Knowledge of definitions alone is not enough – you must understand application.
4. Skipping the four dimensions
The four dimensions of service management (organisations and people, information and technology, partners and suppliers, value streams and processes) are often skipped in study, yet they constitute about 10% of exam questions. Understand that each practice and activity must consider all four dimensions to deliver value holistically.
5. Insufficient number of practice tests
Some candidates complete only 1-2 practice tests before the exam. This is not enough to understand the question format and identify weak areas. The minimum is 200-300 practice questions (5-7 full tests).
6. Lack of error analysis
Taking a practice test and checking the result is only half the work. The key is to analyse each incorrect answer and understand why you made a mistake. Without this, you repeat the same mistakes on subsequent tests.
7. Panic before the exam
The ITIL 4 Foundation exam is not difficult if you are well prepared. Typical pass rate is 75-85% for people who completed training and took practice tests. If you consistently achieve 75-80% on practice tests, you have a very high chance of passing the exam.
Tip: The day before the exam, do a light review (flashcards, key concepts), but don’t study intensively. Ensure good sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast before the exam.
8. Technical problems during online exam
Many people don’t test equipment and internet connection before the online exam, which leads to stress and delays. Log into the exam platform the day before the exam and test everything according to PeopleCert instructions.

It is proof of knowledge of a globally recognised framework, which opens doors to advanced ITSM roles, improves understanding of relationships between IT and business and provides solid foundations for further development towards ITIL 4 Managing Professional or Strategic Leader.
To pass the exam on your first attempt, you need:
- Solid theoretical knowledge based on the official ITIL 4 syllabus
- Understanding of concepts, not just memorisation of definitions
- Practice on practice tests – minimum 200-300 questions before the exam
- Systematic approach to study – 4-6 weeks of study according to plan
