IT Manager:Contemporary Challenges and Key Competencies (Outlook 2025+)

The IT manager plays a key role in shaping the organization's technology strategy and ensuring that the IT department effectively supports business objectives. Challenges include managing complex digital transformation projects, optimizing IT costs, ensuring cyber security, managing talent in technology teams, and keeping up with rapidly changing technologies (AI, cloud, Big Data). Not only operational management, but also strategic technology leadership is becoming crucial.

Necessary technical skills include extensive knowledge of various technologies and trends (not necessarily at an expert level, but enough to make strategic decisions), understanding of enterprise architecture and IT service management (e.g. ITIL). Management competencies are primarily project management (Agile, Prince2), budgeting, risk management, building and motivating teams, and change management. Strategic thinking, decision-making, negotiation and excellent communication skills, both with technical teams and non-technical executives, are also key. "Leadership" and "technology awareness" are fundamental to the role.
